Matthew Cleverley
Matthew Cleverley is the firm's primary attorney. . He is licensed to practice in all of the Courts in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. He is also admitted to practice in the Federal Courts for the Districts of Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, Wisconsin, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Cleverley received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and is a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society. Mr. Cleverley received his Juris Doctorate degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. During law school, Mr. Cleverley was appointed a member of the prestigious Moot Court Honor Board. The Moot Court Honor Board oversees the functions of the Moot Court program and consists of individuals who have shown excellence in their moot court programs.
Mr. Cleverley has been a licensed property manager for Oregon, and has published three books on property management: The Landlord's Handbook: How to Comply with the Oregon Landlord and Tenant Act; Renter's Rights: a Renter's Guide to the Oregon Landlord and Tenant Act; and The Fair Housing Act Compliance Guide. He presented numerous training seminars for property managers and their organizations. He also presented testimony before the Department of Housing and Urban Development on changes to the Fair Housing Act.
While in Portland, Mr. Cleverley was in-house counsel for one of the nation’s largest real estate management and syndication firms. He provided legal advice for more than 60 properties in 15 different states. He provided legal advice in the acquisition and disposition of real property, employment issues and general business operations. His expertise in mobile home park law made him one of only a few attorneys nationally who regularly practiced in the field. While representing the property owner, Mr. Cleverley participated in completing a $200 million REMIC with a Wall Street securities firm.
Mr. Cleverley is actively involved in community activities. He is a trained mediator and mediated disputes for the Clackamas County Dispute Resolution Center. He helped develop the county’s pilot Peer Advocate Volunteer program to mediate landlord and tenant disputes in mobile home parks. He co-chaired the Multnomah Bar Association’s Dropout Prevention Committee that tried to reduce the high school dropout rate by teaching high school students the results of dropping out of school.
Mr. Cleverley is one of the country's premier creditor rights attorneys.. He has filed hundreds of bankruptcy adversary actions nationwide, recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars for clients.
Mr. Cleverley is an active member of community and service organizations and other business groups. He volunteers as a cub scout leader, little league baseball coach and high school debate judge.
